If you are thinking of retiring to Panama, you’ve come to the right place.
In planning for retirement many people choose Panama for diverse reasons. The fact that English is spoken here and that there is an English speaking community existing from the years during the construction phases of the Panama Railroad and the Panama Canal is a good reason.
There are many descendants of the original Silver People, the West Indian people, who immigrated to Panama to find employment and better opportunities who retain their knowledge of the English language. The Panamanian government also encourages and invests in the bi-lingual education of our school children to stimulate fluency in speaking English.
Also, there is a growing community of English speaking expatriates from Canada, The United Kingdom and the U.S. who call Panama their home. A good number of them are retirees who found a home in Panama and have been building a lovely, stable community in Boquete, Chiriquí and also in Bocas del Toro.
Another consideration is that Panama’s economy is dollarized; although our national currency is called the Balboa, we spend U.S. dollars making it easy for those coming especially from the U.S..

Radio Stations– there are a couple of radio stations in Panama that, if not run totally in English, have segments hosted by personalities who speak English. My favorite is CoolFM on 89.3 here in Panama. You may click here (after registering, of course) and listen to it on line.
